Stanmore

Stanmore is 6km south west of the CBD and is well served by buses and a fast train service. Stanmore was originally part of land grants to John Jones, who named his grant 'Stanmore' after his birthplace in England, and those of Thomas Rowley and Major Johnstone (founder of nearby Annandale). The area was primarily farmland until the arrival of rail in 1878, when Stanmore boomed as a residential area. On its gently rolling hills fine Victorian mansions and terrace houses were built, and at the turn of the century, these were joined by smaller bungalows and semi-detached houses of the Edwardian and Federation period. After World War 11, Stanmore became home to many immigrant families, who brought with them the flavour of their former countries. As with most of Sydney's inner city suburbs, Stanmore's quiet residential streets now feature houses under renovation as the area swiftly regains its popularity as a desirable residential area.

Many of the mansions of its early days remain, and are beautifully renovated. The same can be said of the plentiful terrace houses and semis that have changed from family homes to highly sought after inner city residences. Amidst these, you'll also find examples of modern apartments and old industrial buildings converted into fashionable lofts.

Stanmore and its neighbours Petersham and Leichhardt are home to all manner of interesting restaurants including inexpensive Indian and Asian, family run trattorias and the fine bistros of Norton Street and Annandale. Stanmore is home to the wonderful 2 hatted degustation restaurant Sixpenny which serves home grown produce. It is also home to the famous Newington College and within a short drive or walk there are plentiful state and church operated schools. On the Parramatta Road border and in the shopping centre near the station you will finds shops, cafes and services to look after basic needs. In nearby Leichhardt there are great specialty shops, supermarkets, cafes, wine bars, cinemas and a number of renowned restaurants. For the sports minded there are gyms and pools of Newtown, Victoria Park and Leichhardt Aquatic and Fitness Centre.
